Oakleaf Hydrangea

18th-century naturalist William Bartram called the oakleaf hydrangea “a very singular and beautiful shrub.”

The plant thrives in moist woodlands and along riverbanks, as well as most southern gardens, unless you have white-tailed deer!

Bartram is credited with naming the plant, and his drawing of leaf and blooms is a masterpiece of scientific and artistic detail.

In 1999, the Alabama legislature designated oakleaf hydrangea the state wildflower.
